Gilchrest the "Alleged Republican"

Lew, you're absolutely right about Gilchrest's defeat. For proof, all you need to know is that Rush Limbaugh was celebrating it on Wednesday, calling Gilchrest an "alleged Republican" and his opponent who won a "true conservative." His justification for this was that Gilchrest had come to oppose the Iraq war, which is the dividing line between "liberals" and "conservatives" in talk radio-land.

I find it most interesting that Limbaugh dismissed the endorsements Gilchrest received from Newt Gingrich and George W. Bush as "the old boy network." Not long ago Gingrich and Bush were among Limbaugh's great heroes; now he apparently considers their endorsements worse than worthless. I guess they could betray conservatives on every other issue under the sun, but sticking up for a guy who now opposes the occupation of Iraq was the last straw.
