Report from Colorado

Well, I managed to convince myself to go to my precinct’s caucus tonight, which is no small feat since I hate campaigns and elections like poison. I told myself that as a political science teacher, I should make it a research opportunity.

There were 4 people in my precinct caucus and the other 3 voted for Romney. That seems to reflect the overall sentiment of the state since Romney seems to be beating McCain handily in most counties at the moment here.

I see however that McCain and Clinton are cleaning up nationally. All this proves is that Americans absolutely love war. We apparently are so utterly paranoid about the hated foreigners that we’re willing to vote for someone who wants to wage a 100-year war at the cost of untold trillions against some 5th rate middle eastern countries because “they” are all coming to get us. And we’re also willing to vote for his equally bellicose equivalent on the Democrat side.

We’re basically like 19th century Imperial England with all the belligerence, racism, and idiotic sense of “honor,” but without the culture and literacy and ability to communicate in complete sentences.

UPDATE1 Another local Paulist writes from the Colorado Springs area about his caucus:

“here were the results out of 13people attending.

1 unmarked ballot.
Huckabee 3
McCain 3
Paul 3
Romney 3

Looks like a tight race to me.”

UPDATE2 - I see that in my home county of Denver, Ron Paul beat Huckabee, getting 11 percent. I know there were a lot of Paul supporters at the joint caucus I attended. The religious right has few supporters in an urban county like mine.

Government-worshipping warmongerism seems to be a favorite pasttime of the Bible Belt and among the hicks of the hinterland who think that “them towelheads are a’ comin’” to get their toothless women, so perhaps the absence of such people might indicate why Huckabee and McCain have relatively few friends in the city.
