McCain Really Is the New Bob Dole

As Jack Kenny asserts today, John McCain is the Bob Dole of 2008. For more proof, consider that Dole wrote a letter to Rush Limbaugh, who has been beating McCain up mercilessly on his show, asking him to reconsider this approach to some degree because of McCain's allegedly conservative voting record while Dole was GOP leader in the Senate. Limbaugh read the letter on the air today and, as he said, it's not "scolding" as the Politico story would have it, nor is it a full endorsement of McCain. (Dole said last night on Hannity & Colmes that he has no favorite between McCain and Romney, which ought to tell you something about both of them.) Nevertheless, the fact that Dole felt the need to write Limbaugh about the matter suggests that he really likes McCain.

On a side note, Limbaugh says that he can't support McCain because, among other things, he has cosponsored and/or voted for a slew of liberal legislation over the past decade or so. Interestingly, Limbaugh had no problem in 2004 supporting George W. Bush, who had the power to stop most of this legislation from becoming law simply by exercising his veto but failed to do so, signing much of it with great enthusiasm. There's more to this McCain issue than mere political disagreements.
