Here’s a heartwarming Ron Paul story from Robert Mayer:
Last night around 7:00 PM, I received a phone call
from a friend who organizes the Ron Paul Meetup group
in my area. He tells me that it has just come to his
attention that Ron will be flying into Houston later
that night and the short-notice plan was to produce a
convoy of local supporters to escort him from Bush
Intercontinental airport to his home in Lake Jackson,
about an hour and a half to the south. The intent
behind this was largely a symbolic gesture, to send
the message that wherever he goes, his supporters are
faithfully behind him all the way. (Just to be clear,
this plan had the direct involvement of Ron’s personal
driver, Bruce Bolock, who was communicating with the
other volunteers along the way.)
Three pickup trucks sporting large, A-frame Ron Paul
signs in the beds started the convoy right at the
airport. I joined a group of about eight other cars
at about 10:30 waiting alongside the freeway to fall
in line at about the one-third point along the route.
We see them approaching and the horns begin honking
and momentarily our dozen-plus convoy is complete
cruising down highway 288 in a steady stream with
hazard lights flashing. It was an exhilarating
feeling! As I understood it, the plan was to get to Lake
Jackson and eventually everyone would exit off and
return home. I’m following near the rear of the pack
and the next I know we’re pulling up in front of Ron’s
modest neighborhood home! At this point I’m thinking,
“OK, we’ve done enough – it’s time to turn around”,
but then I see Ron’s saintly wife, Carol, coming out
to the street corner waving enthusiastically to
everyone. Then I see Ron himself going out of his way
to greet everyone possible, going from car to car
shaking hands and expressing his sincerest gratitude.
Here’s a 72-year old man who has been running non-stop
for the better part of the past eight months finally
catching a rare opportunity to come back home, it’s
midnight and he’s obviously exhausted, yet it was
plainly evident that he was deeply touched and
reinvigorated by this show of support from a couple
dozen locals.Wow, what an amazing individual. I immediately tried
to imagine such a situation occurring with any of the
other major presidential candidates: Giuliani?
Clinton? Romney? Obama? McCain? Edwards?
Thompson? Even Huckabee? Not a chance! Of course I
already knew it, but this experience really drove home
the point of what a truly genuine, down-to-earth
person Ron Paul is. I’m convinced that even if he
were to go on to become president of the United
States, it wouldn’t change him (although circumstances
would, of course, prevent this kind of special thing
from ever happening again.)This night was one I will always remember. Ron Paul
is one-of-a-kind.- Robert -
