Report: Giuliani Billed City Agencies for Trips

By The New York Times

The Politico’s Ben Smith takes a look at previously undisclosed records that indicate Rudolph W. Giuliani billed “obscure city agencies” — including agencies responsible for regulating loft apartments, aiding the disabled and providing lawyers for indigent defendants — “for tens of thousands of dollars in security expenses amassed during the time when he was beginning an extramarital relationship with future wife Judith Nathan in the Hamptons.”

The article states that the city comptroller questioned the expenditures in 2001, but the mayor’s office cited security as the reason for refusing to explain the costs. Aides to the Giuliani campaign said they are investigating the matter.

“As far as we are concerned, these are all legitimate expenses incurred by the N.Y.P.D. while performing their duty protecting the mayor,” Anthony Carbonetti, an adviser to Mr. Giuliani said.
