Writes Paul Craig Roberts: "How do we know that Senator Larry Craig is guilty? The only evidence is the accusation of a police officer. One thing we definitely know about police officers is that they are the only people who lie as much as members of the Bush administration.
"What about the senator's guilty plea? From what we know about the coercive nature of the prosecutorial system, people take plea deals to avoid prosecution. The senator knows that everyone indicted and prosecuted is presumed guilty and that his constituents would regard him as guilty even if he won the case, thinking that he used "influence" to get off. So he accepted a deal dropping the charge to a misdemeanor and no trial that would make him the spotlight of publicity.
"The Brownshirt Republicans regard Senator Larry Craig's possible, but unproven, homosexuality to be a serious crime for which he must be drubbed out of office. However, they do not regard constant and continual lying by Bush and Cheney to be troublesome. Nor do the Republicans care that Bush is a war criminal who took the US into acts of naked aggression entirely on the basis of deception. Nor do the Republicans care that Bush has violated federal statutes, run roughshod over the US Constitution, violated the civil liberties of US citizens, justified torture, discarded the Geneva Conventions, and is planning yet another act of naked aggression defined as a war crime by the Nuremberg standard established by the US itself.
"This tells you all you need to know about Republicans."
