More on the Vick Plea

As expected, I have received my share of supportive -- and hate -- mail on the Vick piece. From what I can tell, those who are angry are saying that in Vick's case, we should not worry about rule of law. Whatever he did was so bad that there need to be legal shortcuts to deal with the likes of him.

Writers on this page are fond of using the term "blowback," and that is what we have here. The government has created RICO and a thousand other very, very technical federal "crimes" that give government prosecutors huge amounts of leeway and ability to cut corners in order to gain convictions.

Unfortunately, the changes in law have come so gradually that many people are not aware of the legal revolution that has taken place in the past 60 years. Joe Sobran is right: we need to have a funeral for the Constitution and face the reality that we are now in a "Thus Spake Zarathustra" world.
