This weekend being the Sunday before the July 4th holiday, I saw basically the same sign in front of many churches this week as I drove around Pensacola, Florida: Special Patriotic Service This Sunday. Unfortunately, what this means in many cases is state worship instead of God worship. Songs will be sung in praise of the state instead of in praise to God. The flag will be saluted instead of the Bible being exalted. And let's not forget the military. Christians in the pew will be told to ask God to bless our troops as they defend our freedoms. Veterans will be recognized for their "service."
What does a holy God who wants no other gods before him think about patriotic church services?
