There are now different threats to liberty — and, in the US, different foreign monsters to shore up support for the perpetual warfare state, as well as models other than Marxism to inspire the American intellectuals — but it is interesting and useful to look back and think of the significance of the Soviet system and the decline of socialism, which had muddled liberal minds for more than a century even more than it muddles them now.
