Madrid, Apr 24, 2007 / 11:35 am (CNA).- The Archbishop of Toledo, Cardinal Antonio Cañizares, warned this week the government sponsored educational course “Education for Citizenship” “is leading us to totalitarianism” and is “incompatible with the identity of Catholic schools.”

...
He stressed that the purpose of the course material “is not that we be good, but that we behave well,” since “when there is no freedom of conscience, freedom of education, we head towards totalitarianism. Education for Citizenship is leading us to totalitarianism.”

"Not that we be good, but that we behave well." - This could be the motto of American public schools. Public schools, of course, have alway been full-time "education for citizenship" sessions with the purpose of making the students into efficient and obedient blank slates for the state. Not that most parents have ever had a problem with this.
