Another Cost of War

An unusual, and unexpected, examination of the human costs of war is the new film Hannibal Rising, the latest installment in the Hannibal Lecter series. As its' title suggests, Hannibal Rising tells the story of how Hannibal Lecter was transformed from a loving child who dotted on his little sister into "Hannibal the Cannibal."

Hannibal begins his journey to the "dark side" as a direct result of World War Two when, after his parents become "collateral damage in a fight between Nazis and commies, a vicious snow storm traps young Hannibal with a group of Nazis who kill and eat his beloved sister. As Hannibal's nemesis in the story (a French detective whose experience in the war parallels Hannibal's) says "What was human in him died in the snows, he is a monster..." a monster created by war.
