The President Who Killed for Us

Oh wait a second. There have been so many. But I suppose that killing Mexicans, American Indians, Spanish, Filipinos, Germans, Japanese, Italians, Koreans, Vietnamese, Cambodians, Panamanians, Iraqis, Serbians and Afghanis—along with people from dozens of other places—is not quite as divinely romantic as killing hundreds of thousands of your compatriots to keep the nation together.

As for presidents dying in office, I have the most sympathy for William Henry Harrison, who gave an epic inaugural address and caught pneumonia, spent his one month in office on the sick bed drugged up on opium and then died. I actually feel for that man, since he did very little damage to America while he was president. His successor, John Tyler, ended up being one of the lesser bad presidents in US history, certainly among the Whigs, as he turned his back on his own party and vetoed much of its nationalist corporatist agenda.
