Civil Liberties and Political Parties

Posted by William L. Anderson at January 16, 2006 04:48 PM

About 10 years ago, it seems that Republicans were more interested in civil liberties than they are now. It was the Republicans, after all, that at least had hearings on Ruby Ridge and Waco, and the Democrats who sought to justify government murder.

The difference, not surprisingly, is who has power. Republicans are in power today, and have taken the country to war and clearly have used the state apparatus to take away our rights. While I am glad that the Democrats have re-discovered at least some rights and are against the war, I have no confidence that if they retake power -- as they inevitably will -- they will govern any differently than what we have seen. My guess is that they will further use the powers that Bush has seized and use them against legitimate business enterprise.

So, in the end, I want a pox on both their houses!
