Carefully Managed News

For those who still haven't caught on to the propaganda role of the major news media - a role that is neither exclusively "liberal" nor "conservative" in orientation, but "statist" - observe the television networks' coverage of Cindy Sheehan's anti-war protest at Crawford, Texas. Video coverage - most of it from early in the demonstrations - shows only a handful of Sheehan supporters at the site. However, I have heard two different reports from observers at the scene telling of hundreds of cars that have arrived, stretching for vast distances reminiscent of the closing scene in the "Field of Dreams" movie. I personally know of a number of people who have gone to Crawford, their contributions to the crowd size amounting to only a miniscule fraction of the people who have been roused by Cindy's stance.

The latest exercise in news management came, this morning, from a cable news channel, telling us that President Bush had left the ranch - albeit by helicopter, doubtless to avoid confronting the "rabble" he pretends to represent. Videotape showed our fearless leader at a little league baseball game throwing out the first pitch! Perhaps tomorrow's coverage will show him at a county fair, judging an apple-pie-baking contest!
