I thought I'd mention a couple of great Americans from my two favoite states:
Charles and William Bent (New Mexico and Colorado)
Both Charles and William were entrepreneurs and traders in what is now Colorado and New Mexico. Charles founded Bent's fort on the Arkansas River, a major commerical center in its day. They both promoted peace throughout the region between the Indians, the Mexicans, and the Anglos. Such peace-loving businessmen have never fared well when the American government has other plans, however. The American invasion of Mexico eventually led to an uprising in Taos, NM that killed Charles, and William was briefly imprisoned by a Unionist Militia when it was assumed (correctly) that Bent would warn a law-abiding band of Cheyennes that a US army detechment was on its way to slaughter them at Sand Creek.
William's sons, Robert and Charles, however, had the bad fortune of being present to witness the "great men" of Denver society hack women and children into pieces. Robert would go on to testify against the murderers to no avail and Charles would join an Indian Guerilla band.
At any rate, the Bent family boasted many enemies of tyranny.
