Last night I was surfing the TV. At one point I surfed past some footage on the Falluja seige, immediately followed by History Channel program on the Alamo. Then it hit me, George Bush = Santa Anna. Natalie Maines, of the Dixie Chicks, was right to be, "ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas." Bush doesn't represent the defiant Texan spirit at the Alamo or Goliad. The sad reality that Texans need to face is that Travis, Crockett, and Bowie have more in common with some of the Shi ite and Sunni militias than they do Bush.
As for Bush, he has much more in common with Santa Anna than he does with a Travis. Both have given their respective scrappy enemies slogans to motivate the continuation of the resistance. For the Texans it was: "Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!" For Iraqis it is: "Remember Falluja!" Both, have commanded slaughters on weaker opponents. Both effectively have lost wars of oppression.
Natalie Maines was wrong about one thing though, Bush is not really from Texas. He's a Connecticut Yankee, through and through. Besides, as Waylon Jennings said, "you just can't live in Texas unless you got a lot of soul." Those who order Alamo's, Goliad's, or Falluja's have no soul.
