Sky Captain

I don't know if I'd call Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow a successful movie, but it sure is fun. The entire film, with the exception of the actors, their costumes, and any props they hold, is computer generated. There are no physical sets in this tribute to 1940s pulp.

Gwyneth Paltrow is good as a wisecracking newsgal. Edward Shearmur's lush score is appropriately over the top. Jude Law saves the world from a mad scientist. And a newscaster notes, after robots attack New York and other cities, that "once again the governments of the world are calling on the private, mercenary forces of Sky Captain" to save the day.

This is writer-director Kerry Conran's first movie, and if the plot and dialog are not always what they might be, the visuals are gorgeous. See the site above. Sky Captain is rated PG, and is boy and girl-suitable.
