NPR's Scott Simon sermonette on the federal WWII memorial isn't linked yet, but it is worth listening to. In an emotion-drenched voice, he tells us that in the first few years, the US almost lost WWII. Even later, what, for example, if we had failed in our invasion of German-occupied France? The Russian government would have fallen and the US would have ended up as an island in a fascist sea. And then, truckling to the Nazis, the US would never have ended school segregation. So we must slog on in Irag. As Jack Paar used to say, I kid you not.
PS: Various skeptics have questioned my description of the OKC monument as 161 desk chairs. The "Field of Empty Chairs" is now open to the taxpayers, so you can visit yourself.
