The US bestows more of the benefits of Western civilization on this benighted land: the income tax. (Thanks to C.J. Watson for the link) I'll always remember the presidential radio address of Ronald Reagan which started: "Lives there a man with soul so dead, Who never to himself has said, Have I paid my fair share of income tax?"
