Do you say "pop" or "soda"? "Potato bug" or "pill bug?" And do you call it a "hoagie," a "hero," or a "sub?" Take the test and score your regional pedigree. One problem: the testmakers need to add subcategories, especially for Yankees, as the Great Lakes Northerners, for the most part, ain't no regular Yankee types. We're miles apart from the Northeasterners, and much more like our neighbors to the South than like those to our immediate East.
I'll never forget a local Southern California comedian I saw, years ago, in a CA nightclub. I think Dick Hartwick was his name. He said us hillbilly midwesterners just couldn't get away from these three phrases:
"That'll work"
"There ya go"
and
"Oh yeah"
Of course, all 3 phrases are a staple of every midwestern conversation you'll ever hear.
