Lose / lose

The issue of gay marriage is a good illustration of how anti-statists get completely sidelined, by the way. On the one side, there is a statist proposal to have the government enforce marriage contracts between homosexuals, thus increasing State power.

On the other side, there is a counter-proposal to federalize marriage, also most likely increasing State power. (And both proposals of course take for granted that the State has the moral authority to define marriage.) Whichever wins, the State gets aggrandized, to the detriment of civil institutions, which become less important than legal institutions in deciding such questions. The whole thing is driven by sentimentality and hysteria on both sides, from those who think gay marriage will somehow endanger regular marriage and from those who think the State should have the power to make things "fair" for homosexuals (and presumably everybody else).
