The neocons' Lincolnian worshipping of "democracy" has always been a smokescreen for more-or-less dictatorial rule by an elite (i.e., the neocons) in the name of "the public interest." This is a theme of the critical books on Straussianism by Shadia Drury and Claes Ryn, among others. And it is becoming more and more apparent every day. The Dec. 27 Washington Post reported, for example, that the American occupiers of Iraq have scrapped plans to privatize Iraqi industry to replace Saddam Hussein's socialism. They have also abandoned their plan to construct a constitution that would at least try to protect individual liberty.
The hell with freedom, free markets, and free enterprise, as long as the neocon cabal that "enjoys great success" in the Bush administration, as Irving Kristol has said, can continue to effectively run the show and get rich while doing it. On to Iran, Syria, Lebanon, and Libya!
