Pardoning Lenny Bruce

Writes Elizabeth Wright:

"Norman Singleton sure got it right. We now have freedom to engage in all forms of licentious speech and expression, as the right to political dissent is being shut down. My Governor Pataki just 'pardoned' comedian Lenny Bruce, who was convicted on obscenity charges in the 1960s. Yet, concerned as he is about the dead comedian's posthumous reputation, you can be sure the good Governor will do nothing to insure the rights of dissidents and protesters to express themselves when the Republican Convention comes to town next year. As Mr. Singleton suggests, will porn and obscene language be all that's covered by the First Amendment?"
