NELSON WHITE (1938-2003)

Nelson White passed away last month. He was 65 years old, much too young.

If it is true that a man can be measured by those individuals and institutions he reveres, Nelson was a true aristocrat, a “front lines” soldier in the struggle for liberty.

He was a long time supporter of the Mises Institute, The Center For Libertarian Studies, LRC and could always be counted upon to show up at conferences and meetings wherever and whenever scheduled.

He didn’t think much of politicians, but when it came to Ron Paul, Nelson considered him the Thomas Jefferson of our times.

If I have portrayed Nelson White as a solid, paleo-libertarian, I have told only half his story. There was another Nelson White. An idiosyncratic Nelson White.

He was a Knight and Officer of the Templar Order. To those who may not know, these folks are a modern extention of the historical Templar Order of the Early Middle Ages. Nelson traveled to Austria almost every year to meet with other Templer Knights to carry out their “noble objectives”.

Nelson published hundreds of book titles under his,“The Technology Group.”The books, many written by Nelson, covered varied subjects, like: Survival, The Occult and Magic. Some of his books covered areas I had never heard of.

I recall, at a conference, Nelson once asked me if he could place some of his books on our CLS literature table. I agreed, but when I noticed what he had displayed, I swooped it all up, fearing the state or other medieval entity would throw us all in a dungeon.

It wasn’t difficult to locate Nelson in a crowd. His booming voice and infectious laugh gave him away. He was always good natured and eager to help. We will miss him.

Nelson is survived by his loving wife, Sheila.
