Paul Johnson is happy with state looting of church lands, and usurpation of church authority, by the rotten Tudors, since it helped destroy Christendom and bring on the sovereign empire (sovereignty, as Joseph Stromberg notes, being an attribute of God that the state seeks for itself). Another step on this glorious road: the contruction of a sovereign global empire of democracy, in the best New England tradition.
