The Subject of Pirates Becomes Both Terrifying and Amusing

Recently pirates seem to be everywhere, from satire news shows such as The Daily Show to news channels such as CNN and animated shows like South Park.

The subject of pirates seems to be both terrifying and amusing. Since 2008, the rise in banditry near the coast of Somalia has skyrocketed. Bandits have been seizing ships and taking hostages, then later demanding a random for their safe return.

When most people think of a pirate, they imagine peg legs, eye patches, and swords.

"When I think of a pirate, I think of a guy with a talking parrot on his shoulder. Or Captain Hook," sophomore Joseph Grant said. Yet, these modern day Somali pirates tote AK-47s and use motorboats as their main source of transportation.

A pirate is defined as, "a person who robs or commits illegal violence at sea or on the shores of the sea."
