We bought this last year for my then 5-year-old son. He was pushed up a grade this fall (skipped K) and is now in a special advanced placement class which is a combo of AP 1st/2nd graders. At the start of this school year he could take a blank US map and write in all 50 states correctly including the capitals! (well, ok….some spelled phonetically but he comes from spelling challenged parents!) When he had to do a report last month on a state….his teacher was amazed at his ability to fill in all the state names without referring to the map the other children were struggling with. Our main reason for buying the thing was for him to use to independently look at where dad was traveling (husband takes many international business trips) and after dad left for the airport he’d use his globe to find out how long it would take for dad to get from NY to wherever he was off to that week. Can you say parent guilt toy? Best one dad’s come home with so far though! He loves the game where the toy asks you to find a place on the globe too. My other 5-year-old (the boys are 11 months apart in age) is just now getting interested in the globe…..durability is great. We did have a broken pen (the globe wouldn’t ‘say’ what you touched on the globe) but one call to the 1800 # and we had a replacement within 5 days! JPEG or Simultaneous RAW+JPEG
Whenever you shoot the EOS 20D, you can choose to have it record RAWs or JPEGs alone, or in RAW plus JPEG formats simultaneously. The JPEG recording format is ideal for purposes such as Internet image transfers that require reduced file sizes. Canon’s proprietary RAW (.CR2) format, on the other hand, employs lossless compression to ensure the highest possible image quality, and is recorded at 12 bits per pixel to provide a wider range of tones and superior detail in bright highlights and deep shadows when compared with JPEG files. RAW files must be processed before they can be opened in your computer’s image-editing software. This conversion process typically takes only a few seconds using the dedicated driver software, which will convert the RAW file into a standard 8-bit-per-channel JPEG or TIFF file, or for maximum tonal range, a 16-bit TIFF. There are six selectable settings for in-camera JPEG image quality, when CF card space is at a premium.

The EOS 20D also features a built-in monochrome mode, a first in Canon digital SLRs, which uses digital processing to re-create the effects of a number of different black and white filters and toning effects. Advanced Printing
The camera features Canon’s Print/Share button, which illuminates when a successful connection is made between the camera’s USB port and a PictBridge compatible printer or Windows PC. Pushing the button when lit will initiate a print of the currently displayed image (based on the default PictBridge or Direct Printer settings of the printer) or an automatic transfer of images to the PC. When connected to a Canon compact photo printer, the camera/printer combination allows for ‘movie-prints’ (sequential frames of a movie clip printed as thumbnails on a single card) and photo IDs (passport style ID photographs).
Direct Photo Printers
For desktop large-format printing, try one of the Direct Photo Printers which allow you to print directly in one of two ways: plug the compatible PowerShot camera into the Direct Photo Printer using the supplied cable, or simply insert a memory card with supplied adapter. Online sharing
Free membership is included to Canon’s online Canon iMAGE Gateway, with 100 Megabytes of free storage space for online album storing and sharing. Users can upload favorite images and now movies to the site and then direct friends and family to individually secure online ‘albums’.
